Blondie was enjoying a prematurely warm spring day, lolling in the sun on the porch, while I was talking on the phone and equally enjoying the afternoon. I had completed the usual job hunting activities (six applications submitted) and a training run (4.6 miles). Black Beauty had been dozing on the opposite side of the porch, when suddenly she came to "full alert."

At 5:30 in the afternoon, I didn't anticipate a visitor to the place, so I wondered what had caught her attention. A quick glance over my shoulder revealed all.
Once again, the spring visitors had come out of hibernation and were gracing the area with their presence. Unfortunately, this "bandit" had selected my bird feeder for foraging.

I am normally a very generous person. I have taken in strays for most of my life (please note there are now four "strays" permanently relying on me for most (if not all) of their care and feeding. However, this was too much! The raccoon removed the bottom of the bird feeder, dumped the sunflower seeds on the ground, and proceeded to gorge herself (or is it himself - didn't get close enough to observe the tell tale signs). I thought screening in the porch would have solved the visitation issue, but apparently not entirely. There was not much left to do but to join Black Beauty in staring at the interloper.

If there is a positive side to spring, at least "Chuck" has not been sighted. Hopefully, I will not require the use of the live trap I purchased last year. Then again, it is still early in the year and I am about to wage full out war on a squirrel that has decided that my house makes a tasty treat to supplement its diet.
Happy Arbor Day, 2010!
